In the Lisbon region, a region with a long history in national viticulture, the vineyard area consists of traditional Portuguese grape varieties and the most famous international grape varieties. A huge variety of wines is produced here, made possible by the diversity of reliefs and micro climates concentrated in small areas of the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lisbon wine region is one of the most productive in Portugal. The vineyards are very influenced by the sea and the winds because they are so close to the Atlantic coast, but there are also vineyards planted further inland, protected by mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lisbon region, formerly known as Estremadura<\/em>, is located northwest of Lisbon in an area of about 40 km. The climate is temperate due to the Atlantic influence. Summers are cool and winters are mild, although the areas furthest from the sea are a little cooler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This region has good conditions for producing quality wines, however, about fifteen years ago the Lisbon region was essentially known for producing wine in high quantity and of low quality. Thus, a restructuring process began in the vineyards and wineries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Probably the most important restructuring took place in the vineyards, since the new varieties planted were chosen according to their production in quality and not in quantity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, wines from the Lisbon Region are known for their good quality \/ price ratio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a vineyard area of approximately 18 thousand hectares, the region has 9 Denominations of Controlled Origin (DOC): Alenquer, Arruda, Bucelas, Carcavelos, Colares, Encostas d’Aire, Lourinh\u00e3, \u00d3bidos and Torres Vedras. It also has the homonymous Protected Geographical Indication (IGP), which translates into the Regional wine Lisboa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
