Val dos Reys Reserva 2017 awarded in Brussels
Val dos Reys Reserva 2017, a regional red wine from Lisbon, was launched less than a year ago and it is already beginning to reap the fruits of its beautiful quality: a silver medal at the Brussels World Contest.
“A key event for the world of wine”
Concours Mondial de Bruxelles
The Brussels World Contest was created by Louis Havaux, in 1994, and Belgium hosted the first edition. Initially, only wines were tasted and classified, however, from 1999 onwards, spirits also became part.
This is a unique and highly regarded event in the world of wines. The competition classifies and distinguishes quality wines from all over the world, regardless of the type of wine and its price.
In the first phase, after deciding on the city that will host the next edition, the contest strictly chooses renowned tasters, coming from all regions of the world.
In 2020, the 27th edition of the World Contest in Brussels was held and, as expected, it was very different due to adverse conditions. For the first time in the history of this competition took place in early September, in Brno – Czech Republic.
With more than 250 tasters, the contest started on September 4th, with all safety conditions.
55 juries evaluated – each one – up to 50 wines per day, during the three days of the contest. The entries were divided into coherent series, taking into account criteria such as origin, variety, alcohol content, residual sugar content, and price. In total, in 2020, 8,500 wines from 46 producing countries participated.
Interestingly, Portugal was one of the countries that most wines took to the competition.
After all the tastings and analyzes carried out on the wines during these three days, the jury will then hand over the medals to the highest scoring wines.
The medals were distributed to 40 different countries. In the first place, France appears as the country that received the most medals (570), as well as the country that won the most wines. Spain follows with 495 winning wines, Italy 363 and Portugal comes in fourth place, totaling 306 winning wines, less than last year.
In addition to the Grand Gold, Gold and Silver medals that the contest rewards, this one also distributed trophies to the “revelation” wines of the year 2020. This selection is made to the wines that obtained the best results in the 7 categories in the contest.

Val dos Reys Reserva 2017
Red Wine, a Regional product from Lisbon, bottled in a single 750 ml bottle, and with 14% Vol, the Val dos Reys Reserva 2017 is, for many, an extremely high-quality product.
It is a regional red wine with an intense garnet color and a very fruity aroma, with flavors such as cherry. With vanilla notes of oak in which it aged for months, the flavor of this wine balances with the aroma, with a strong structure framed by lightly toasted tannins. Its ending is very long but smooth.
It is recommended to have this wine with stronger dishes, such as red meat. If you want to taste it with the starters of a meal, choose cheeses with intense flavor and aroma.
